The Penn State Greene County Gardeners (GCMG) will be hosting a Spring Gardening Seminar April 8. The seminar will be held at the Greene County Fairgrounds, located on Route 21, east of Waynesburg. The seminar will be upstairs in Building #10.
Pre-Registration is $12 or $14 at the door. Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the 4-H Building. The seminar will begin at 9 a.m. after registration and opening remarks. During the event, GCMG will be holding a series of one-hour presentations on various gardening topics. At the seminar, there will be kits to test garden or lawn soil. The soil test kit will be $9, and it tests the nutrient levels that the soil contains.
The first presentation during the event will be on improving your home lawn held by Brian Leichliter, golf course superintendent of Lone Pine Country Club. The topics Leichliter will be covering will entail information about lawn growing season in addition to learning how to fertilize and protect a lawn. Russell Gibbs, service forester for the Bureau of Forestry, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, will talk about the basic forest practices and how to manage and increase the health of trees.
The third presentation will be on the life of honeybees, hosted by David Lake, master gardener intern and Penn State master gardener, in addition to being the pastor at the First United Methodist Church in Waynesburg. Lake will cover the importance of honeybees in the ecosystem and how valuable they are to the environment. After presentations, there will be evaluations for the attending audience to reflect on what they have learned.
Questions for the evaluations will be based on the presentations, such as “Have you adopted a new horticulture or pest management practice as a result of attending previous Penn State Extension meetings?”
In addition to evaluations, a silent auction and door prizes will be held and distributed. The community bank and other local businesses donated in support for the upcoming event.
