Waynesburg softball’s senior pitcher, Sydney Wilson, has been receiving praise since her freshman year at the university.
In her first three years, Wilson has received President’s Athletics Conference Pitcher of the Year twice, First Team All-PAC selection three times, PAC Newcomer of the Year, PAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Eastern College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and All-ECAC Team selection.
Wilson was also a part of the 2022 and 2023 PAC Championship teams, as well as the 2024 PAC Championship runner-up team.
“I truly love Waynesburg,” Wilson said while reflecting on her first three years. “Not only have I been very lucky when it comes to softball, but I’ve been lucky when it comes to my teammates. They make the hours of hard work easier and are a huge part of my success here in my three years.”
Now that it’s her senior year, Wilson expressed a desire to get back on top of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
“When it comes to my senior year, I am very eager to continue where we left off last season,” Wilson said. “The year didn’t end how we wanted it to, but we came so close and we know that getting that far is achievable once again. Stepping up as a senior leader and continuing to play the way we all know how to is the only way we can build off of last season.”
Last year, Wilson appeared in 28 games with 20 starts, finished with a 2.18 earned run average, struck out 96 batters, finished second in the PAC in complete games, saves, and innings pitched, and tallied her 300th career strikeout. She also set the record for Waynesburg’s all time wins as a pitcher and received the PAC Pitcher of the week not once, but twice.
Wilson talked about personal goals she has set, as well as goals she has set for her team for the 2025 season.
“Obviously, receiving PAC Pitcher of the Year would be great,” Wilson said. “I know I am capable of that award and know the work that needs to be put in to achieve that. As far as team goals, a third PAC Championship would be an awesome way to end my time here at Waynesburg. That’s something I think the whole team can agree on.”
Waynesburg junior catcher Alyssa Rager, commented on what makes Wilson stand out against the other pitchers in the PAC.
“Sydney has good spin and she has the ability to mix speeds whenever it’s necessary,” Rager said. “She’s a really smart pitcher and knows what to throw when and how to make weak contact.”
Rager also mentioned a few of the personality traits that make Wilson an asset to the team.
“Sydney is a great leader and is always putting everyone else before herself,” Rager said. “No matter how good she does in a game, it’s always about how the team did and not her personally. We would not be the program we are today without her.”
Wilson and the rest of the Waynesburg softball team starts play this spring following last season’s third consecutive PAC Championship appearance. The schedule will be on the Waynesburg University Athletics page once it’s released.
