The Waynesburg University women’s soccer team begins Presidents’ Athletic Conference matches this week.
So far this season, the women’s team is 4-1-1 after finishing their slate of non-conference opponents, winning games against Mount Union, La Roche and, most recently, Carlow and Mount Aloysius. The pair of Division III non-conference games last week were both victories. The offense tallied eight total goals in the wins.
Waynesburg beat Carlow on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 4-1 and Mount Aloysius 4-0 on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The Yellow Jackets even played a Division II program to prepare for its PAC schedule. The team tied Glenville State 0-0 in a reserve game on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Head Coach George DeAugustino is optimistic about the outlook for his team entering conference play.
“I was excited that we were able to score four goals in both matches this week and had multiple players get on the stat sheet. I also loved that we only conceded one goal this week. The team defending and goalkeeping this season has been excellent so far,” DeAugustino said. “Glenville State was a great opportunity for a lot of our players to get quality minutes and see live action. They were a great test, and we held our own in a 0-0 draw. Hopefully a lot of players built up some confidence coming out of that one. I am extremely proud of how well we played.”
One of the players who got on the stat sheet was sophomore Julz Mohrbacher. She found the back of the goal in both wins last week. Last year, she led the team and was fourth in the PAC in goals with 12.
“Scoring in both games was a much-needed confidence booster for me. It makes me even more excited to start PAC play on Wednesday,” Mohrbacher said.
On top of being an offensive threat for Waynesburg on the pitch, Mohrbacher plays a big role on the women’s basketball team as well.
“Playing basketball along with soccer has made me feel like I have an even bigger support system than I already have,” Mohrbacher said about the advantages of playing two sports. “I love looking at the sideline and seeing my basketball teammates being ball girls and cheering on, not only me, but my other teammates too.”
Mohrbacher and the rest of the team now shift its focus to Westminster for Wednesday’s game. The Yellow Jackets have only beaten Westminster once in their last 18 meetings. The last win for Waynesburg was back on Oct. 15, 2011, by a final score of 1-0.
Additionally, Waynesburg’s last loss to Westminster was last year in New Wilmington, PA. It was a relatively close game with a 4-1 final score.
Waynesburg’s last game against Westminster at home was two years ago. It lost that game with a highly competitive effort. The final score was 1-0.
Kickoff on Sept. 25 against the Titans is set for 6 p.m. Waynesburg will follow that up with a road matchup against Bethany on Sept. 28, at 1 p.m.
