Women’s basketball defeats Penn State Altoona in final game before holiday break

The Waynesburg University women’s basketball team defeated Penn State Altoona on Saturday, 74-61, in their final game of 2025.

Junior guard Mia Henkins led Waynesburg in points with 17, and senior guards Kalista Friday and Clara-Paige Miller recorded 14 points in the win.

Henkins said that she liked how she was able to help build momentum for the team.

“For me personally, my three-point shot was definitely effective for my game and helped the team get some momentum in closer stretches,” Henkins said. “As a team, we had exceptional ball movement and worked the ball really well to get the best shot for that possession rather than the first shot we saw.”

Miller said that even with winter break starting after the game, the team was able to remain focused on the game.

“I was really proud of how focused we stayed all game,” Miller said. “It would have been easy to allow our minds to wander to the upcoming break, but we stayed locked in on the game, and we’re very happy to go into break with a win.”

Miller said that now the team can take a break and come back into the new year with an even stronger mentality than before.

“This break is very valuable to allow our bodies time to heal from minor injuries, but also emotionally from a busy fall semester,” Miller said. “The break allows us to grow individually and come back together stronger and ready for more conference games.”

Henkins said that she is great to be on break now before conference play resumes.

“This break is super important because after the new year, we get into all PAC play, which means we will see some pretty tough competition,” Henkins said. “Getting some time with our families to celebrate the holidays as well as rest our bodies is really important for us mentally and physically.”

Waynesburg sits in fourth place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference South Division with a 1-1 conference record and a 4-6 overall record heading into winter break.

Waynesburg rings in the new year with their last non-conference game on Jan. 3 when the Yellow Jackets travel to Pitt-Greensburg for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
