Grove City snaps women’s basketball’s six-game winning streak

The Waynesburg women’s basketball team fell to Grove City College on Saturday, 75-46.

Junior guard Mia Henkins led Waynesburg in points with eight, followed by junior guard Kara McFadden and senior guard Tori Wesolowski with six points.

Waynesburg quickly fell behind as Grove City scored the game’s first 13 points and trailed by 21 points by the end of the first quarter.

Henkins said that the team struggled on both sides of the ball, which led the team to a slow start.

“We couldn’t get our shots to fall at all and just struggled to get points on the board in general,” Henkins said. “Our defense didn’t help us much either, though, and Grove City drove the ball and finished well, so it was hard to get something started.”

Even with the loss, Henkins said that there are some positives to pull away from the game.

“I think we kept our energy up and continued to put in effort even though we were down,” Henkins said. “It was unfortunately just a bad day to have a bad day, and I think we will bounce back on Wednesday.”

Waynesburg five game win streak is snapped in the loss and falls to a 12-11 overall record and an 8-6  Presidents’ Athletic Conference record.

Waynesburg falls to fifth place in the PAC South Division standings. The top four teams in the South Division qualify for the PAC Playoffs.

With the loss, the Chatham Cougars take sole control of the final playoff spot in the PAC South Division before their game on Wednesday vs. Waynesburg.

Henkins said that this is a big game for the team, and he knows what to expect from Chatham.

“We expect an aggressive zone from Chatham that we don’t see with any other team in the PAC,” Henkins said. “They’ve done it for so long that they’ve perfected it, so we have to have our offense prepared.”

Henkins said that the team is going to match up well against Chatham.

“We match up well against them because they are very guard-oriented and play quick defenders that can get the ball down the floor quickly,” Henkins said. “Our posts match up well with their posts as well and can handle their own underneath.”

The team’s next game is on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at home versus the Chatham Cougars at 7 p.m.
