“Brotherhood is Building,” Coach Wilson and Yellow Jackets Football face Westminster Titans on Saturday

Head coach Larry Wilson has focused on building up the culture he envisions for Waynesburg University football. Coming off three straight losses, one of those being against Presidents’ Athletic Conference opponent, the Allegheny College Gators, Wilson now looks to his second matchup in the PAC.

Wilson, a proclaimed offensive-minded head coach, and the Yellow Jackets are averaging just 14 points a game, 175 offensive yards and just four offensive touchdowns.

“It’s about consistency,” Wilson said. “In football, to be consistent, especially on offense, every man has to do their job. We’re just kind of up and down now. We’re getting better.”

Wilson broke down the dream that he has for this football program and how these kids bring his visions to life.

“I believe in a hard working environment,” Wilson said. “We all know we’re 0-3, we had a great work week so far. We had a great lift on Monday, high energy at practice yesterday. We’re just going to try and find that 60 minutes of football to hopefully try and get some desired results on Saturday.”

Turnovers have been the Achilles’ heel of the Yellow Jackets’ offense throughout the beginning of the season.

“Have to take care of the football. We’re doing a poor job of taking care of it on offense,” Wilson said.

The Yellow Jackets lead the PAC in interceptions with six and nine fumbles. Along with the turnovers, for three straight weeks the Yellow Jackets’ special teams have botched a long snap for a punt, all leading to a touchdown for the opposing team.

One shining piece of the Yellow Jackets football team has been their defense. They have achieved: 11 sacks, second in PAC rankings, three interceptions, fifth in the PAC and three forced fumbles, tied for second in the PAC.

Senior defensive lineman Julian King was a big factor by having two sacks in last Saturday’s game against the Gators. King mentioned how the Yellow Jackets’ defense will continue to work heading into PAC play.

“We try to carry it over by having another great week of practice,” King said. “It all starts with preparation, and I think our coaches prepared us very well for the last game; the players have to execute.”

King talked about the mentality and defensive focus that defensive coordinator Matt Tobey has for every game.

“Matt Tobey has a phenomenal defensive game plan for us to run every week,” King said. “We plan on dominating in the trenches because games are won up front with us big guys. Keeping the main thing the main thing: getting the ball back to our offense.”

Coming off a game where the Yellow Jackets had a lead in every quarter, Wilson and his team play this Saturday when the Yellow Jackets return to John F. Wiley Stadium to take on the Westminster College Titans. The Titans are 0-2 on the season under interim head coach E.J. White, their worst start to a season since 2014.

The Titans lean on their two-headed monster at quarterback with sophomore Quentin Goode and junior Sean O’Shea. Goode, the 2025 PAC Newcomer of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, leads the team in passing yards and has the lone passing touchdown for the Titans, however, he has thrown three interceptions. O’Shea, a dual threat, leads the team in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns while also having 114 yards in the air.

“The brotherhood is building,” Wilson said. The Wilson culture will be tested in their second PAC matchup in the Yellow Jackets-Titans duel on Sept. 26 with a 1 p.m. kickoff at John F. Wiley Stadium.
