Women’s tennis week in review

The Waynesburg University women’s tennis team was scheduled to play four matches in the span of seven days. Due to weather, one of those matches was rescheduled and the ladies played three matches.

Starting on Saturday, Sept. 19, Waynesburg squared off against Grove City in Grove City, Pennsylvania. The Wolverines, who are a perfect 4-0 in conference, took the win by the score of 7-0. This was Waynesburg’s first conference match of the year, but was Grove City’s second. Grove City finished second in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference  last year with a 7-1 conference record. Its only loss came to the Allegheny College Gators, the same team that beat them in the PAC championship.

Waynesburg then had some time to prepare for its next opponent. On Sept. 24, the team hosted Franciscan for another conference match. The Barons, who also are undefeated in conference play, took the 7-0 win. These two matches were some of the toughest opponents the Jackets will face this year. Franciscan finished third in the PAC last season with a 6-2 conference record. Its two losses came to none other than Grove City and Allegheny. Franciscan lost to Grove City in the PAC semifinals.

Finally, Waynesburg finished with a nonconference win over the Ursuline Arrows. The final score of that match was 5-2. This was Waynesburg’s fourth win of the season, all of which are nonconference. The Arrows finished last in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference last year with a conference record of 0-9.

“We faced two teams at the top of the conference in Grove City and Franciscan. The girls showed up and competed hard in those matches,” head coach Randy Pettit said. “Very proud of the effort they put in. Ursuline improved over last year, and the girls pulled through with a nice win.”

The Yellow Jackets now look forward to the matches ahead and they aren’t shying away from the importance of this week.

“We have a busy and important week of conference play this week that will go a long way in achieving some team goals,” Pettit said.

Waynesburg has two seniors on its roster this year. Karly Starcher and Julia Luzar both look to lead the tennis team as seniors.

“My personal goal for the season is to continue to lead my team as a senior and leave them with advice and skills that they can use when I am no longer an active member of the team,” Luzar said.

Waynesburg looks towards its next match against the Thiel Tomcats (0-4). Waynesburg’s only conference win last year was against the Tomcats, so the Jackets look to pick up that crucial first PAC win. This match is on Monday, Sept. 28. The Yellow Jackets face Washington and Jefferson, Allegheny and Saint Vincent this week.
