The Waynesburg University men’s soccer team traveled to Chatham Saturday to open Presidents’ Athletic Conference play. Waynesburg didn’t come away with a win. The good news is the Jackets picked up a point on the road. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after going into double overtime.
The match started off slow for both sides, as there were only four combined shots through the first 20 minutes of the game. The Jackets would then open the scoring in the 23rd minute when Cam Sutherland tallied his third goal of the season. This would be the only goal scored for about another 64 minutes of game time. The Jackets took the 1-0 lead into halftime
Waynesburg’s defense did its job for most of the second half. The Jackets only gave up three shots for the first 42 minutes. Unfortunately, Waynesburg would also be unable to score in this time, which gave Chatham enough breathing room to tie the game. The tying goal was tallied by Leandro Nasso at 87:43 which forced overtime. The game would go all the way to double overtime, but nobody could score a goal for either side. Waynesburg head coach Brad Heethuis spoke about what went right and wrong rong in the tie.
“I thought we played pretty well in the first half and created some good chances and limited Chatham’s chances quite a bit,” Heethuis said. “We had a couple guys get hurt… and down the end we couldn’t get the clear that we needed.”
Heethuis also discussed the importance of his team keeping its foot on the gas when taking an early lead.
“The last five to ten minutes we got a little tired and they were coming at us,” he said. “We have to do a better job of being able to hold the ball and keep possession while continuing to threaten their goal.”
Of the ten games Waynesburg has played this season, the Jackets have scored one or fewer goals in six of them. The Jackets haven’t won any game in which they’ve scored fewer than two goals. Heethuis spoke on what his team needs to do to improve offensively.
“Obviously, I’d like to create a few more chances,” Heethuis said. “We’ll continue to work and work on our offensive movement off the ball and try to put some more in the back of the net.”
Waynesburg will look to improve as it continues through PAC play for the remainder of the season. The tie left the Yellow Jackets with one point in conference play. The Yellow Jackets will look to pick up a PAC win this Friday against Grove City at John F. Wiley stadium.
