It was a high scoring match at Washington & Jefferson this past Wednesday. Waynesburg never led in the match, but the Jackets were able to put in two late goals during the second half. For the Jackets [3-8-2, 0-2-2] the scoring came too little, too late as they were already down four goals before their first strike in a 4-2 loss.
Late in the game, Waynesburg’s Jake Hall was given a yellow card, then shortly removed from the game with just over 10 minutes remaining. Waynesburg’s Kyle Deaner and Dante Ohm both were able to put in their second goals of 2019.
W&J’s Jake Fetterman got the scoring going early in the match with a goal in the 19th minute. After that goal Waynesburg kept the game close, but W&J’s Dylan Maynja scored at the 63rd minute, and 27 seconds later John Appiah scored making it 3-0. Finally Alvare Viadas scored W&J’s fourth and final goal in the 68th minute.
The loss was especially disappointing because it continued a six-year winless streak against W&J [6-6-2, 3-0-1]. The current senior class is 0-3-1 against the Presidents after the loss, and unless Waynesburg qualifies for the postseason, the class of 2020 will graduate with never beating their I-79 rivals.
With four games left on their PAC schedule, the men need to win out to have a chance at making the postseason. Last year’s top four teams all had at least four wins with W&J having exactly four PAC wins.
Of the Jackets next four games, three are at John F. Wiley Stadium, with their next game against the top seed in the PAC, Westminster, tonight. Since 2012, Waynesburg has only beaten Westminster once. That win was in 2017 at Wiley Stadium.
