The Waynesburg women’s basketball team was trailing 47-32 at the start of the fourth quarter. The Lady Jackets used a 13-1 run to cut the deficit to three points with a jump shot made by freshman Marley Wolf with 2:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. Bethany however, would pull away with a 6-0 run to win the game 60-51. Waynesburg drops to 0-7 on the season while Bethany improves to 3-4.
Head Coach Sam Jones was pleased with how well Waynesburg played defense throughout the whole game as Bethany only shot 27.9% from the field. Jones thinks Waynesburg’s defense was one of the reasons they made the game closer in the fourth quarter.
“Just got a little smarter with the ball on offense,” Jones said. “Once you kind of get a little momentum, things start to go your way; you hit a few more shots. We got back to winning the battle of the boards and that really helped us too.”
Wolf mentioned being patient when trying to come back in a game.
“We knew that if we just had to keep chipping away as a team, and find the open look,” Wolf said. “If you’re open, shoot it. Don’t think about the score and don’t feel the pressure of the situation. We just knew we had to share the ball to get an open look because every shot mattered.”
Waynesburg had the ball and a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Anika Dansby missed a jumped shot with 1:39 left in regulation. Jones wanted his team to try and shoot a three.
“I was pretty sure they were going to take away the inside,” Jones said. “With that much time, I was tempted to think about going for two. I tried to outthink them and drew something up to get a three instead.”
Waynesburg led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and was ahead about halfway through the second quarter. Freshman Bella Skobel then hit a three pointer to leapfrog Bethany ahead of Waynesburg 16-14 with 4:25 remaining in the second quarter. Bethany wouldn’t trail for the remainder of the game.
Wolf led Waynesburg in scoring with 14 points. Senior Andrea Orlosky added 13 points, which now makes her only 14 points away from the 1,000 point club at Waynesburg. Freshman Avery Robinson collected 10 points on the night as well.
Jones acknowledged how hard Waynesburg played tonight.
“I think we’re just starting to understand and find our rhythm a little bit about who we want to be,” Jones said. “We do have a couple of games left. Then we’ll get into the playoffs and see what we can do.”
Freshman Makenzee Mason led the way for Bethany with 16 points. Freshman Nikki Bradbury chipped in with 14 points and junior Courtney Walker scored 11 points off the bench.
Waynesburg’s next game is Saturday, Mar. 6 against Thiel at 1 p.m. at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Wolf knows what the Yellow Jackets must do to get its first win of the season.
“We definitely like to play with a lot of defensive pressure to pressure their offense,” Wolf said. “That’s when we did best tonight. We realized that whenever we talk on defense and apply a lot of pressure that’s what we’re strongest at. This is senior day, and we want to send the seniors off with a nice victory.”
