Baseball drops out of conference game verse La Roche

The Jackets went on the road to play La Roche University on Wednesday, March 25. The Jackets hung with La Roche but ended up losing in extra innings 8-7.

This takes Waynesburg to a 5-16 record overall on the year. However, the loss on Wednesday did bring to light some pretty notable performances.

Sophomore Trent Giraffa came away with an impressive two hits, two RBI’s, and a run of his own, taking his total on the year to 13 runs as he looks forward for the rest of the season.

“I’m just looking forward to competing and winning games with the team, ” wrote Giraffa. “Hopefully making it into the playoffs and making a deep run in the playoffs as well.”

Senior Dalton Mount also had a good day with two hits, an RBI, and two runs. This brings his total to 11 runs on the season.

Mount is in his last season, and he speaks highly of his fellow teammates.

“My favorite part about this team is the fight and resilience we have,” wrote Mount. “No matter the score, we never feel like we are out of it, and I feel like that has shown in the past couple of games even though we haven’t been able to pull out the wins.”

Freshman shortstop Kaden Flambard also had a good day in the field, as well as knocking in a run and a hit. Flambard has scored a run in six of the seven games he’s played this year as he proves himself more and more.

“As a Freshman coming into a team that had such success last year, I did not know what to expect as a team, but when we came in, they were very accepting of this class and knew we would help with the success they had last year,” Flambard wrote.

First-year coach for Waynesburg, Michael Impellittiere, led Hood College to a 23-17 record last year. He is just one loss away from 17 this season. But Impellittiere still believes in this Waynesburg squad.

“Our record does not reflect the talent we have on our team,” wrote Impellittiere. “We need to finish the next two months strong.”

Waynesburg’s remaining schedule is mostly all PAC opponents, and coach Impellittiere is looking to cement the Jackets to a high seed in the conference.

“I love the way our team competes and never gives up,” wrote Impellittiere. “We need to finish the next two months strong, looking forward to PAC games in April.”

The Jackets will take on Washington & Jefferson at home this Saturday, March 29, for their third PAC doubleheader. Game one’s first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and game two to follow after.
