Sept. 15, 2023 marked the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for Waynesburg University’s
new virtual golf simulator. The facility, which is located in Greene County Country Club, aims
to offer an amazing new opportunity for student-athletes to develop their golfing skills even
further.
“The facility that the University has put together has three golf simulators in it, and a
chipping and putting practice area. The goal in putting the facility together was two-fold, on
one side to enhance the golf programs by providing a place for athletes to train, not just
during the season but during the off-season, or at night-time or when the weather is bad,”
Assistant Professor of Forensic Science, Michael Cipoletti said. Cipoletti also serves as the
head coach for Waynesburg University’s men’s and women’s golf.
“The simulator will provide a big chunk of training time that the golf programs didn’t have
access to before,” Cipoletti added.
Speaking further on the purpose of the simulator facility, Cipoletti said,
“We also think the simulator could work as a very good revenue stream because due to the
collaboration with Greene County Country Club, there are a lot of golfers out there that are
golf junkies that would like to use the facility to play courses there [at the simulator] both
for fun and to train and get better. Furthermore, the simulator will allow us to facilitate
gatherings like corporate outings, birthday parties and many other functions.’
Cipoletti also spoke about what the simulators will offer in terms of technical analysis.
“We call the simulator the Swing Lab, the amount of data we can get from it is incredible,
it’s almost limitless. The number of metrics we can analyze range from an individual’s
swings to their posture, their swing angle and swing planes. The simulator really gives you
the chance to dive deep into the metrics if you want to. Alternatively, you can just focus on
the results that will be displayed, you’ll get feedback on things like how far you carried the
ball, the spin rates and whether it drifted left or right.’
The golf simulator is also available to anyone interested in improving their golf game. The
price per bay is $32 per hour and any student who presents their Waynesburg University ID
will get their first hour for $24. Buckets of balls can be purchased for $5. The facility also
plans to offer coaching from professional golfers at a later stage.
