As part of the annual tradition to celebrate the founding of Waynesburg University, Charter Day will take place on Tuesday, March 19, according to the University’s website. This year, the school is celebrating 175 years as a university since its opening in 1849. With such a date, there will be a multitude of events will take place that day in honor of the school’s history.
According to the events tab on the aforementioned website, Roberts Chapel will hold a Convocation at 11 a.m., which will include a guest speaker, music by the Lamplighters and special awards and emeritus status presented to teachers. A lunch will be held afterwards in the Benedum Dining Hall, where Waynesburg’s famous Charter Day chicken will be served.
The Saturday prior to Charter Day, March 16, will be the ‘Day of Service’ for students as a way to implement the University’smission into this historic day – to educate students to make connections between faith, learning, and serving so they might faithfully transform their communities and the world according to a campus wide email sent by Dean of Students, Kelly Hardie. Waynesburg University Chaplain Josh Sumpter spoke abut what Charter Day means to him. This is not actually more information about the day and includes some opinion.
“I look forward to this day,” Sumpter said. “It is a time to remember those that have come before us and to remember the strong mission that Waynesburg University has developed as we move forward.” Sumpter said, while also trying to express he and his colleagues embrace of a longstanding institution they have been a part fo for years. “I am grateful to be a part of the 175th year of Waynesburg University’s history and to see the ways that God is at work within this special campus community,” Sumpter said.
