Lately, there have been some changes making the campus community more inclusive to commuter students. A couple of these changes include the additions of the Commuter Lounge and the Commuter Club.
Most of these initiatives started in the 2024 fall semester and have continued to grow going into the 2025 spring semester with more events for commuters being hosted by the Commuter Club. The lounge is an open space where anyone can enter to relax as it provides a quiet space to study or gather with friends.
When asked what their opinion of the Commuter Club and lounge is, Logan Campbell, a commuter and member of the Club wrote in an email interview, “I think the Commuter Club is a good thing, and it’s nice that they are doing things that make us feel a part of the campus life. It is also nice that now we have a place to go between classes that isn’t a car like I know a lot of commuters would do in the past.”
Campbell also wrote, “I am seeing a lot of positive changes on campus for commuters. I am noticing there is a lot more socialization and talking among students and that the Commuter Lounge is becoming a sort of hub for many students.”
Eric Burcham, another commuter, shared a similar sentiment.
“I like the Commuters Club, and think it’s been a great idea so far as it’s providing an opportunity for commuters to find a community,” Burcham said.
The Commuter Lounge is not only a space for commuters to gather, but also the students who reside on campus and have friends that are commuters or just want a quiet space. Often, resident students will be in the commuter lounge doing homework or relaxing, just like the commuter students do.
The Commuter Club and the Commuter Lounge, established by different groups, created a space for commuters to connect with each other and other students on campus allowing them to get more involved.
The Commuter Lounge was provided by the University while the Commuter Club was started by students on campus, as well as the president of the Club, Morgan Bedilion, with Kaitlyn Thomas as the vice president of the club.
The University put the empty space from the old eHive to use with the Commuter Lounge. It is helping the commuter students to socialize more and become more involved, and the Commuter Club is doing this as well.
Due to these changes, Waynesburg University might see more commuter students enrolling and getting involved on campus.
