Lacrosse falls to conference opponent Chatham

The Waynesburg women’s lacrosse team traveled to Pittsburgh to take on the Chatham University Cougars on Tuesday night and lost 22-1.

Head coach Stephanie London shared her thoughts on how the team is playing overall in the season.

“The team felt good last night,” London said. “We are still playing through some pains but overall, we were ready. We live for game days, so the quick turnaround wasn’t an issue, we were ready to compete, and everyone’s spirits were high.

London mentioned the positives from the loss against Chatham.

“Yes, we knew we had to come out strong and I think we did that,” London said. “Chatham is a strong, aggressive team and so we prepared to play a very physical game. We have been working on slowing down fast breaks, communicating, applying pressure, and moving better on defense.”

Waynesburg’s Waverly Lorne scored the first goal from either team in the first 34 seconds of the game.

“Getting an early goal felt good,” Lorne said. “It showed Chatham that as a team collectively we were going to fight and they were going to have to work for a win, we weren’t going to make it easy for them.”

Lorne would lead the game with six shots, seven draw controls and caused four turnovers throughout the game.

Chatham would answer back scoring seven goals in the first quarter and five goals in the second quarter forcing a running clock to happen throughout the rest of the game.

Waynesburg goalie Diana Gurecka had seven saves and two ground balls to cap off the night.

“Overall, we know the score looks rough, but we had a pretty good defensive game,”  Lorne said. “We were able to get a bunch of stops and slow the ball down on defense, which Chatham had to work to overcome.”

Waynesburg is currently 1-12 now on the season and are 0-5 in conference play. The Yellow Jacket’s next game is at John F Wiley stadium and is the first home game since March 9th. That game was also Waynesburg got their first win of the season.

We are also excited for the opportunity to return to Wiley and play in front of our home crowd,” London said. “Looking back, we didn’t know if we would get the chance again this season, so we were blessed to be able to do so.”

Waynesburg will play this Wednesday against Franciscan; the game starts at 5 p.m.
