Lacrosse falls to two conference opponents this week

The Waynesburg women’s lacrosse team had two very eventful games over the course of last week and the weekend.

Waynesburg took on Franciscan Wednesday and Washington and Jefferson on Saturday.

The Jackets would fall to the Franciscan on Wednesday 23-4 as Waynesburg’s Waverly Lorne, Rylie Alexander and Ella Sheedy all scoring goals for Waynesburg.

“It felt great to score two quick goals to get a quick lead for the team,” Lorne said. “It was nice having the momentum in our favor for the time being.”

Waynesburg would take an early 2-1 lead six minutes into the game. Franciscan would then score nine goals to take a 9-2 lead heading into the second quarter where they would trigger a running clock with eleven minutes and forty-five minutes left in the second quarter.

“As the game progressed, we lost momentum,” Lorne said. “We started to focus on winning the small battles like completing a transition, getting ground balls, and winning the draw.”

Alexander would score Waynesburg’s only goal of the second quarter while Ella Sheedy would score the fourth goal for Waynesburg in the fourth quarter.

“It felt amazing,” Alexander said. “I was so excited to have that break to goal and the whole time I was saying to myself “Don’t miss, don’t miss.”

Waynesburg would be 1-13 overall on the season and 0-6 in PAC play heading into Saturday’s game against W&J.

“We look to improve our talking on defense,” Alexander said. “Quick passes and keeping our spirits high as we finish our season.”

Waverly would score Waynesburg’s lone goal in the first quarter as Washington and Jefferson would hold a 9-1 lead in the first quarter.

“It always feels good to score early,” London said. “This is lacrosse, it can take less than 10 seconds to score. No lead is ever sufficient.”

Lorne would lead the game with three goals, seven ground balls, six caused turnovers and three drawn controls throughout the game. Mya Riggle and Ziomara Reyes would have their own impact during the game with Riggle notching two controls and two shots on frame, while Reyes would cause a single turnover and scoop two ground balls during the game.

“Our goal was to play smart and focus on the fundamentals of the game,” London said. “Making smart passes, not holding onto the ball too long, making good cuts and getting our sticks in front of the attackers sticks on defense. We have nothing to lose this season, so we should be playing big in every game this season.”

Following Saturday’s game Waynesburg is now 1-14 on the season and 0-7 in conference.

“Going into our game against Allegheny on Wednesday, we need to play stronger defense, clean up our transitions and find open players quicker than actually use them,” London said. “When we score a few goals it’s like we get a bit lax about being up and when we get a few goals scored on us, we start to regress in our skills and our confidence drops. We can’t allow that to happen. Being consistent will be the key to our success.”

Waynesburg will be at home against Allegheny this Wednesday and it starts at 3p.m.
