Late goal sinks Jackets against Muskingum

Tanner Cyprowski – For the Yellow Jacket

The Waynesburg University men’s soccer team couldn’t keep the game scoreless forever,  and gave up a goal with ten minutes left, leading to another non-conference loss Wednesday night.

Waynesburg’s defense played well all game until the 80th minute mark hit. The back line  surrendered a few mistakes which led to the game winning goal. Muskingum forward Bailey Adams snuck past the Waynesburg defense to give the Fighting Muskies a 1-0 lead and ultimately, the win.

Waynesburg head coach Brad Heethuis thought the problem could have been avoided “if [the ball] was cleared earlier.”

The Waynesburg offense had a few more chances in the closing stages of the game but couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net to send the contest to overtime. .

The game itself was physical from the first whistle to the last. The officiating crew handed out three yellow cards all in the second half.

Heethuis told his team “to be calm on the ball, find pockets of space and to attack the back line.”

Throughout the night, Waynesburg found space as the team registered 13 shots compared to Muskingum’s  seven.

Only four of those shots were on frame, however. The Jackets were also dangerous on set pieces.

They tallied six corner kicks in the game, four of those coming in the second half. Forward Daniel Hott was the main option on offense for Waynesburg. Hott led everybody with six total shots in the game.

Waynesburg, 2-3 overall, still has four games left on its non-conference schedule. The Jackets next game is Sept. 14 at home against Mount Aloysius, two weeks ahead of the Jackets PAC opener Saturday Sept. 28 at Chatham.
