Men’s and women’s golf bring home gold

The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets men’s and women’s golf teams both took the course this past Tuesday, with both teams traveling to compete in the Bethany Invitational at Oglebay Jones Course in Wheeling, WV.

“With both the men’s and women’s teams going on at the same time, we have a golf cart and try to spend as much time as we can with each golfer. We usually try to keep them focused and make sure they have water or something to eat when they need it and I am proud of how both played.” said Head Coach Mike Cipoletti.

On the women’s side, senior Avery Robinson was the only player that Waynesburg had in the invitational, due to sophomore Maeve Hanley and senior Tess Smith having class conflicts and freshman Emma Fannin facing an illness at the beginning of the invitational. Robinsonwnet on to win the invitational, placing first with a score of 110 and capturing her first medal at the collegiate level. “The course was one of the most challenging I have had to play on but overall, I am happy with the outcome of the match.” Said Robinson. Cipoletti also stated about Robinson, “She’s the first medalist we’ve had here on the women’s side in quite some time. She’s the first one I’ve coached and for her to go out there and do it on her own that was pretty special.”

On the men’s side, they had five men compete in the invitational and finished third in the team standings. Freshman Michael Clark played the best round of his career at Waynesburg thus far, as he came in third in the individuals with a score of 80.  Sophomore Hudson Pincavitch and senior Tyler Townsend both had scores of 91 and 92 respectively, and junior Tyler Rollinson scored 120. Sophomore Matthew Karpeal, was the one who finished atop the leaderboards in the individual standings with a score of 74 and won the invitational on the individual side. “I’ve always enjoyed playing on that course and being able to score well really helped with my confidence. Overall, it was good seeing the team play well on such a difficult course, but we still have some room for improvement.” Said Karpeal

“With Karp (Matthew Karpeal), when he is rolling like that there is no coaching we can do. Only thing for him we can do at that point is get him water.” said Cipoletti.

Currently, the Yellow Jackets men’s team is sitting at third in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) standings. The next time they will take the course will be Sept. 26 against La Roche College in their first home meeting at their brand new home at the Greene County Country Club where they recently unveiled a brand new indoor facility.

The Yellow Jackets women’s team is currently sitting at eight in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference standings. The next time they will be in action is Sept. 28, when they will be traveling to Grove City, Pa. to compete in the Grove City Invitational.

Following La Roche, the men’s team will take the course on Wednesday at Latrobe, Pa. to compete in the Saint Vincent College Invitational, with the women’s team traveling to Steubenville, OH on Saturday to compete in the Franciscan Fall Invitational.
