Men’s basketball loses in thriller against Geneva

On Saturday, Jan. 24 the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets fell in a conference matchup to the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes 64-63.

The Golden Tornadoes opened the game on a 15-3 run just five minutes into the game. The Yellow Jackets managed to continuously cut down the Geneva lead but remained down six at the half.

“We knew we put ourselves in a hole,” Mitchum said. “We knew how important this Conference matchup was to us.”

The Yellow Jackets returned the favor and started out the second half on the right foot. Five minutes into the second half Waynesburg took the lead for the first time in the game.

Waynesburg held the lead 61-52 with a little over three minutes left to play, however Geneva took the lead with a Ryan Rachic 20-foot jumper with two seconds remaining.

Mitchum finished second on the team with 17 points. However, for Mitchum scoring the most points isn’t a part of his goals.

“I could care less how many points I score,” Mitchum said. “I want wins and my job on this team is to get certain guys the ball where they can be successful.”

The Yellow Jackets would get the ball back with two seconds left on the clock and Mitcum threw up a halfcourt shot as time expired, however it did not go in.

Senior guard P.J. Suggs shared his thoughts on how the game end saying,

“One thing I can take away on a personal level is that sometimes things just don’t go your way, but team wise I think we played really well together.”

Suggs finished the night with 12 points in the loss but coming into the game Suggs was very proud of the team.

“We’ve improved a lot over the course of the season, especially in the game prior I felt like we made a lot of positive leaps.”

The Yellow Jackets are now 7-11 overall on the season and 5-8 in PAC play. Waynesburg will be at home at the Rudey Marissa Field House on Wednesday Jan. 29 against a PAC opponent in the Chatham College Cougars, tip-off is at 7 p.m.
