On Friday night Jan. 31, RGB Coffee, located at the bottom of Waynesburg University’s campus, hosted What’s Smokin’ BBQ food truck outside its doors. The event took place from 4-8 p.m. and included food, live music inside the coffee shop and coffee.
Ben McMillen, the owner of RGB, started similar events such as open mic nights on Wednesday for anyone interested in coming in to sing. This idea translated over to a collaboration with What’s Smokin’ BBQ to bring a variety of customers in.
“We have a lot of new customers coming in, obviously, with the food truck,” McMillen said. “They bring in their own customers and John Hicks, the live entertainment, brings in his own people as well. It’s been great for us and it’s a good mix for them.”
What’s Smokin’ BBQ owner Troy Hellen talked about the experience for them and what they bring to RGB for a successful community event.
“We’ll be set up every Friday while they have music nights and bring in bands,” Hellen said. “We sell BBQ and we have a lot of cool stuff to try on our menu.”
McMillen encourages students to join them for the night and enjoy a great meal while supporting the community and small businesses. As a college student, it’s easy to miss home-cooked meals. What’s Smokin’ BBQ brings that aspect to the University, and RGB brings what they hope to make a “cozy atmosphere.”
Freshman nursing major, Macie Justice, was one of the students who took advantage of the event. “I tried the pulled pork mac and cheese,” Justice said. “I would highly recommend it. It’s very delicious.”
The event will continue to take place each Friday from 4-8 p.m. with new entertainment each week.
“If you’re from the University or if you’re a local person, come on down and check us out,” McMillen said. “We certainly appreciate the support!”
