Halloween is quickly approaching, and Autumn is in the air with every passing day. Fall break is just around the corner, and as the Waynesburg University student body prepares to go home for the weekend, the Student Activities Board (SAB) has big plans for the following weeks.
Frank Harbaugh, a graduate assistant to Pat Bristor, Associate Dean of Students and advisor to the SAB, said that once the students get back from Fall break, they will be greeted by a Halloween movie night on Friday, Oct. 20, in Johnson Commons hosted by the SAB. At the weekly SAB meeting, the members agreed on four options for the movie showing and put a poll on social media for the university students to vote on. Harbaugh wrote that the result was the SAB will play the movie “Halloweentown” and provide popcorn and snacks.
On Oct. 21, the SAB is holding a trip to Kennywood Amusement Park for their annual Phantom Fright Night. Bristor said, “Students seem to really enjoy,” this yearly tradition and it usually brings in 40 to 80 students. Bristor said it is one of the SAB’s most popular events they hold. She then said that the next Monday, Oct. 23, in the Beehive on the third floor of the Stover Campus Center, is the Pumpkin Fest where “it’s everything pumpkin.” Students will be able to paint ceramics or actual pumpkins while bonding over pumpkin snacks and drinks that will be provided by the SAB. There will also be two contests for best-painted ceramic and best-painted pumpkin.
Classes will continue, but on Oct. 27, the students will have the opportunity to unwind on a Friday night with the Halloween dance. Harbaugh, one of the people in charge of the Special Events Committee, said that the SAB has arranged for a DJ and they will also have a photo booth for students to take pictures in their halloween costumes. He said there will be a costume contest and snacks as well, it will take place in the Beehive.
On Oct. 30, the cross-country club is having a costume run that students can dress up and participate in. Bristor said that there would be a prize for the fastest male and female in cross-country and in the student group. She said that later that night, there will also be a halloween-themed bingo in the Benedum Dining Hall.
Finally, on Halloween night, The Harvest Fest will take place. The Harvest Fest is one of the activities that the SAB holds to bring community to the Waynesburg University campus. “It is a collaboration of a lot of different clubs and organizations coming together,” Bristor said. This year, Jordan Taylor, the President of the SAB, announced that the theme for the Harvest Fest would be Horror Movies. Clubs are encouraged to set up a booth and decorate it to go with the theme. Bristor said it gives the clubs a chance to spread their name to the Waynesburg University student body, plus the club that wins the best booth will get $100 towards their club budget. Bristor said that there would be a pumpkin drop and pumpkin bowling during the Harvest Fest as well.
