Service has always been a pillar at Waynesburg University, letting students exercise their ability to serve for over 50,000 hours a year.
The Center of Student Leadership is looking to involve more students and find a way to combat busy schedules by having late-night service projects from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday nights called Sundown Service.
“College students always have interesting schedules to manage and often have difficulty sculpting time during the day to serve to the extent that they would like,” said Angelica Good, the leader of the Sundown Service project. “Sundown Service works to combat this issue while allowing students an on-campus, late-night opportunity to serve with all the resources provided to them.”
According to Good, each project idea is based on a current need in the surrounding area.
“Our goal is to make life a bit more functional for others whether that be providing them with resources they could utilize, brightening their day with a small gesture like a handmade card or providing our time to work alongside them in some way,” Good said.
That is only a small portion of the projects offered to university students when stopping in for a late-night service project.
“Most recently we had done little like school supply bags for kids in the school districts that, you know, maybe just don’t have school supplies they may need but they’re quick things that students can do even if they only have a little bit of time,”said Adrienne Tharp, director of the Center for Service Leadership and Bonner Scholars Program.
Other projects to mention are tie blankets that are sent to the Ronald McDonald House, cards, paintings, grab-bags, resource bags and so much more that are each selected and given to surrounding communities in need.
They also welcome and encourage student service suggestions and to head to the Center for Student Leadership office on the first floor of the Stover Center to enlist your ideas.
When asked about upcoming service events, Good said, “Everyone is welcome to come by to take part in a weekly project. In addition, we also encourage you to reach out to our office to learn more about weekly opportunities available based on interest.”
The Center for Student Leadership is present on various forms of social media where they post about upcoming events and general updates about quick and easy services available surrounding the Waynesburg campus.
“There are so many different ways to be involved and ways to tie it to, you know, career and academic goals but, our hope is just to have students be more engaged whether that’s just coming in here for an hour and maybe just kind of you know to think, oh, I want to be a part of this,” Tharp said.
