On Feb. 15, Saturday Night Live (SNL) celebrated 50 years by putting on one of the biggest shows in its history.
SNL first aired on Oct. 11, 1975, which at the time was called “NBC’s Saturday Night” and stared Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Laraine Newman, Dan Aykroyd, Garrett Morris and Jane Curtin, and was hosted by George Carlin, with all but two who returned in friday night’s special.
SNL is produced by Dick Ebersol and Lorne Michaels, and is a sketch comedy show that is for viewers ages 18 and older, and mixes a variety of different topics and humor that creates funny scenarios and comedy routines and cramp it into a 90-minute show. I think SNL is a great mixture of comedy, music and allows actors, comedians, singers and celebrities in general to act goofy and show off their talents in front of a live studio audience. SNL is currently the longest running sketch comedy show on television and viewers were tuning in at 8:30 p.m. every Saturday night, although this time around, things looked to be a little bit different.
According to apnews.com prior to the anniversary episode, “Fans will be able to tune in Saturday Night during the regular time slot where they can watch the very first episode from October of 1975 and was hosted by George Carlin, with the show airing at 11:30 p.m. eastern and 8:30 p.m. pacific. Carlin is set to return to the show along with a star-studded cast of returning stars as well.”
SNL pulled out all of the stops for the 50 anniversary and according to usatoday.com, there was a big number of band and cast members, The bands included “Arcade Fire, Backstreet Boys Bad Bunny, Bonnie Raitt, Brandie Carlile, Brittany Howard, Chris Martin, David Byrne, DEVO, Eddie Vedder, Jack White, Jelly Roll, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Mumford & Sons, Post Malone, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Robyn, The B-52s and The Roots” and the cast will include “Michael Che, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Marcello Hernandez, James Austin Johnson, Colin Jost, Michael Longfellow, Ego Nwodim, Ashley Padilla, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson, Devon Walker, Emily Wakim, Jane Wickline and Bowen Yang.”
