Softball dominates Penn State Greater Allegheny in non-conference opponent play

The Waynesburg University Softball team tallied a total of 33 runs and 21 hits in the sweep against Penn State Greater Allegheny on Tuesday.

Waynesburg started game one with freshman Pressley Meadows in the circle for her third start. The Jackets scored first with a six-run first inning after a couple hits, walks and errors creating a cushion early on that only grew from there.

Waynesburg put up some more runs in the third from a patient eye at the plate and some wild pitches. A similar outcome happened in the fourth with some more walks which led to a double by Rylee Rohbeck scoring two herself, helping collect a five-run inning. The game would end in five innings with a score of 14-1.

Meadows would pitch a complete game allowing only three hits and one run, getting her second win of the year. Meadows said the team always has her back when she is on the mound.

“I am really happy to be a part of a team that does have trust in me to get it done and is behind me the whole time to back me up if I need it,” Meadows said

Game two would start with another freshman pitching for Waynesburg Madison Baker which would be her first start of the season.

The Jackets scored first after a couple of walks and an error in the field, increasing the lead 2-0 after the first inning. Some more walks in the second inning would lead to a five-run slate with help from a two-RBI single from senior Kaitlyn Jagielski and an RBI triple from freshman Graeson Grubbs to increase the lead by eight. Grubbs went three for four as well.

The third would only have two runs, but from an inside-the-park homerun from sophomore Kaitlyn Sullivan increasing the lead 9-0 after three innings.

However, the fourth was when the Jackets really cemented the game, scoring 10 runs. Waynesburg got seven hits this inning tallying six singles and a double, freshman Maddisyn Best had a single and double in the inning as well.

The Jackets ended the game in five innings with a final score of 19-0. Baker would only allow three hits and no runs, getting her first collegiate win.

Grubbs said that the out oof conference games do a great job of preparing the team for conference games.

“Our non-conference schedule was designed to expose us to different styles of play and test our abilities,” Grubbs said. “While wins are always good, the real value is in identifying areas we need to improve before conference play.

The Jackets are now 13-2 overall and play their first President’s conference game next against Washington and Jefferson this Friday.

“I think if we just keep playing our game the way we have been we will be set,” said Grubbs on the mindset preparing for the Presidents. “We need to execute our game plan, play with intensity, and minimize mistakes. We’re not worried about them; we’re focused on being the best version of ourselves on Friday.”
