Softball drops DH to Geneva, has Franciscan DH postponed

On March 31, the Waynesburg University softball team travel to Geneva College for Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Waynesburg fell short, dropping both games to the Golden Tornados. Game one ended in a 7-5 walk off for Geneva, who then won 3-0 in game 2.

“They were clean games,” head coach Chris Brunson said. “As long as our season is, it’s not going to be perfect all the time. I thought our pitching did really well today, and I liked our resilience. It happens when you play a long season and you’re on the road. We are going to regroup and get after it.”

The Yellow Jackets bats were hot in game one as they outhit the Golden Tornadoes 13-10 with multiple hits by Meysa Heitmann, Rylee Rohbeck, Braylee Corbin, Madie Cicero and Kassidy Trimble. Game two would fair a little differently, as the Yellow Jackets only conjured up four hits.

“I think this team has been riding high and we have been doing a lot of good,” sophomore first baseman Rylee Rohbeck said. “As unfortunate as these two losses were, it brought all of us closer together. We’ve become more unified as a team, and I think the unity of this team is essential for us to help build off and will take us far in the season.”

Rohbeck recorded two hits in two at bats, scored a run and had 2 RBI on the afternoon. Waynesburg combined for 12 total hits through both games of the double header.

“We’ve got to flush these games and flush this day,” Brunson said. “I thought our energy was pretty good in spots, but I thought it could be better. Conference games are conference games, so you got to be ready for every game. Doesn’t matter the opponent and we’ve got to be ready.”

Waynesburg was set to play a doubleheader against PAC opponent Franciscan University; however, those games have been moved to Tuesday, April 7.

“We have to get back to work,” Rohbeck said. “Yesterday was very telling for a lot of our struggles and now we have ample time to work on them. This team is using yesterday as an example and fuel for our fire, and we will be ready come next week to resume PAC play.”

After hosting Franciscan for two games next week, the Yellow Jackets will stay at home after one day off to play another doubleheader against PAC opponent Bethany on April 9.
