This month marks the beginning of the Waynesburg University’s Student Senate elections.
In an email sent to all students on March 17, Student Senate President Olivia Toth said she strongly encourages students “to apply and take this opportunity to make a difference.” To be eligible, all applicants must be in good academic standing with completed submissions delivered to Toth which are due by 5 p.m. on March 24. Student Senate “is a meaningful way to advocate for your peers, contribute to positive change, and help shape the Waynesburg University community,” said Toth.
Executive Vice President Gracie Rape is currently running for reelection. She spoke on the importance on having a place on the Senate and how it is “important to allow the student body to have a voice and Senate is perfect for students to develop academic and social aspects of this campus. It is a great opportunity to see how a Senate is run and connect with other students who share the same interests as I do.”
With the election only around the corner, Rape was asked why students at Waynesburg should run for Student Senate.
“Senate is a great place to grow interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. It has allowed me to grow as a person and learn how to interact with other peers and higher up individuals. Students should run to share their unique opinions and ideas to bring change to this campus,” said Rape.
The email from Toth that announced the opportunity to run for Student Senate also included campaign rules. For those students that are planning to pursue the elections, the rules for campaigning are as follows: you must not start campaigning until your application has been officially approved by email; you must get approval from Pat Bristor before posting flyers; only use approved bulletin boards; you must not touch or damage other candidates’ materials; you are not allowed to campaign in Johnson Commons; do not put materials on cars, under doors, or anywhere that violates privacy or property; and you are responsible for making sure your supporters, friends and allies do not violate these rules on your behalf.
Voting will be held on Wednesday and Thursday in Johnson Commons.
