Tennis match against Westminster postponed due to poor weather

The Waynesburg University women’s tennis team had its match against Westminster that was originally scheduled for this past Saturday postponed due to rain. Head coach Ron Headlee said missing game action from this weekend shouldn’t impact the overall team performance. Headlee said the team is used to playing multiple matches in a week and the postponement can give his players some extra practice time.

“Usually it’s bang-bang with matches during the week,” Headlee said. “So, it’s been nice to have this off time in between matches to work on some things.”

The team opened its season Saturday, Sept. 1 with a 5-4 victory over Pitt-Greensburg. The Yellow Jackets will not take the court again until Wednesday, Sept. 12, past publication date, when they face Thiel in a home match at 4 p.m.

That leaves the Yellow Jackets eleven days in between matches to work on their game.

“We have a very young team,” said Headlee. “We have been working on moving on the court, setting up our shots and not letting the ball sail on us. This has been a good time to work on things like that.”

Junior Noelle Hughes is somebody Headlee said the younger players on the team look up to for leadership and positivity.

Hughes said she relishes the role of being one of the team’s leaders on and off the court.

“I figured they’d look to me so I try to give 100-percent every time out,” she said. “I encourage them to keep their heads up and keep trying. I’ve seen the team getting more comfortable and there has been a lot of improvement since camp week and we are only going to continue to get better.”

Hughes also said that the time off is perfect for her to work on her game and she is looking forward to the upcoming matches.

“I have been working on my serving and getting more power on my serve,” Hughes said. “I also want to become more consistent on getting my serves in because obviously you can’t win if you can’t land your serves.”

The Yellow Jackets home match against Grove City Friday at 3:30 p.m. is a match against a team that is picked to win the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Headlee is looking forward to seeing how his team will respond to that challenge.

“We are trying to get better each time out,” said Headlee. “It will be a good test to see where we are at.”

The Yellow Jackets match against Westminster, originally set for Saturday, has been rescheduled for Thursday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m.
