Volleyball falls to Franciscan 3-1

On Thursday night the Waynesburg University volleyball team lost to the Franciscan Barons in four sets at the Rudy Marisa Field House.

The Yellow Jackets came into this match off a 3-0 loss to Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday and was looking to bounce back into the win column on Thursday night.

Freshman setter Kendall Ellsworth talks about her experience so far this season as a freshman and the help that she has gotten from her teammates.

“It definitely has been a big change,” Ellsworth said. “The game is a lot faster in college than what it is in high school…it is a big help just having supporting teammates and knowing that people are there through your mistakes and your achievements.”

Yellow Jackets took the first set beating the Barons 25-20.

Junior middle hitter Emma Hyatt who led the team with five kills in the first set talks about the support she gets from her teammates.

“I know that they support me… It feels good to be able to perform obviously as one of their starters,” Hyatt said. “A lot of them do rely on me to do my job.”

The Yellow Jackets then went on to fall to the Barons in the next three sets and lose the match 3-1.

Hyatt talks about the change in mindset of the team from the beginning to the end of the game.

“We were almost too calm a little bit, we might have underestimated them,” Hyatt said. “After the first set we got a little bit more relaxed… we get up at some points but overall, we struggled to pick up the competitiveness all around.”

Ellsworth explained the team’s mindset heading into the Yellow Jackets next match against Bethany College.

“We are really focusing on ourselves for Bethany,” Ellsworth said. “A lot of errors were made tonight, and it happens, but we are going to crack down tomorrow at practice, shaking this off and going into Bethany strong.”

The team’s next match will be on Saturday September 23rd as the Yellow Jackets travel to Bethany College to take on the Bisons. The start time is set for 1 p.m.
