Volleyball falls to the Presidents 3-0

On Wednesday evening Waynesburg lost to Washington & Jefferson in 3 sets.

The team was led by juniors Madisen Dayton and Emma Hyatt, both with 8 kills. Sophomore Riley Ruffley followed that up with 18 assists and junior Jordan Stein led the team with 27 digs.

“I thought we had a lot of players working hard,” Dayton said. “The ball wasn’t falling our way and we had a few bad calls from the refs…we struggled to find a groove, and we will use this opportunity to learn and make adjustments further down the road.”

Head Coach Emily Grossman talked about how the team looks at each loss.

“Our team is using the W&J game as a learning moment”, Grossman said. “We did not play our best but we used it as an opportunity to pinpoint what we need to work on heading into our game today against Franciscan: not making so many errors. If you look at the stats we played very similarly to W&J in every category. Kills, digs, assists, service aces – except for errors. We gave them too many free points because we weren’t getting the ball.”

Grossman continued with how she felt her team has done this season.

“As far as our season overall, I am pleased with how things are going,” Grossman said. “We have already improved our win total from last season. I’m very pleased with the growth that I’ve seen from my returners,” she said. “They were very intentional with the work they put in in the spring. Our new players bring a lot of competition to our gym as well which is going to make us better in the day to day. We talk about how we are only as good as who we play every day, which is our teammates in practice. If all of us aren’t getting better, then none of us are getting better”, Grossman said.

Volleyball follows up their game with W&J by competing against Franciscan on Thursday, Sept 21 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Match is set to start at 7 p.m.
