Volleyball knocks off defending champs in first season win

Waynesburg Claims First Win of Season, Splits Doubleheader at Wooster

After starting out the season with an 0-5 record, the Waynesburg University volleyball team claimed their first win of the season by defeating the defending Presidents Athletic Conference Champion Bethany Bison in four sets on Thursday, Sept. 12,  at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Head Coach, Hope Johnston says that the team has worked hard, and was ready for the challenge as they played in front of their home fans.

“The girls were very positive, and then also this was the suicide awareness prevention game as well, which is a great cause that the girls just wanted to play hard for that cause,” Johnston said. “It showed a lot of confidence in our abilities and what we had been working on this whole season up to the point. So we felt prepared.”

The win also marked a huge milestone for  Johnston as she claimed her first career win as head coach for Waynesburg.

The team also traveled to Wooster College on Saturday, Sept. 14, for a doubleheader against Wooster and Pitt-Greensburg.

Waynesburg opened up their match versus Pitt-Greensburg with a heartbreaking 29-27 loss, but answered immediately winning the next three sets and claiming their second victory of the season.

Senior Madi Dayton says that even with the frustrating first set, they went back to playing their game at their level.

“Once we got that sloppy match out of our system, we were back on our mojo,” Dayton said. “We all wanted to have a successful tournament, but that first game made us all tighten up a bit.”

After the win over Pitt-Greensburg, Waynesburg fell to Wooster in the second match in five sets.

Sophomore Krista Wilson says that the team’s plan is to learn from this loss.

“Moving forward into PAC play, our team plans to learn from the mistakes made in the Wooster game and improve our play for the Allegheny game this weekend,” Wilson said.

Waynesburg opens up their PAC play on Saturday, Sept. 21, as they travel to Meadville to take on Allegheny.
