Waynesburg Farmer’s Market back up and running

The Waynesburg Farmers Market is held on the corner of High Street and Morris Street every Wednesday from 9 am to 1 pm. The market started back in May and will continue until Oct. 16.

Students looking to visit should be aware that most vendors are cash only, however, some have other payment options. All three produce stands accept Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons.

“For the vouchers, you have to get certified,” said Scott Hackenburg, the market manager and head of Pursley Creek Farm LLC. “They actually come out and inspect your farm, and it can’t be anything processed. It has to be just the fresh stuff.”

The vendors present sell a variety of products including, but not limited to, local produce, baked goods and even artwork. The wares will vary from week to week depending on availability and popularity with customers.

Sue Joseph, the owner of Sue’s Bakery, said, “It is like a trial and error. I never know, and I then kind of figure out what’s going to be most popular. Sometimes customers will ask me if I have anything specific, too.”

According to both vendors at the market, it is encouraged new customers to walk around the full market before making any purchases. Customers should take time to ask and examine the different products based on size, quality, and sourcing to figure out the best value for them. Vendors are also a wealth of knowledge on their given craft and are happy to tell you more about what they have. Hackenburg mentioned that while some vendors have their own available, it is recommended to bring a reusable bag.

Shopping locally doesn’t have to be limited to Wednesdays either. There are additional Saturday markets for the month of September on the 7th and 21st. They are held in the Tractor Supply parking lot and according to Hackenburg, tend to have more traffic than their Wednesday counterpart.

“It’s tough to get stuff up and running,” Hackenburg remarked regarding the Saturday market. “The eventual goal is to get a building up actually.”Any information in regard to future plans on the Waynesburg Farmers Market Facebook page with the following link. https://www.facebook.com/people/Waynesburg-Farmers-Market/100057725947233/
