Waynesburg University recently implemented significant updates to its Student Code of Conduct, aiming to enhance accessibility and comprehension for the student body. Aaron Sielski, the Director of the Code of Conduct, oversaw these changes upon assuming his role this past June.

The alterations, primarily conceptualized by Dean of Students Kelley Hardie, introduced a more user-friendly format to the Code of Conduct. Sielski highlighted that the switch from a standard PDF document to an interactive e-book was among the key changes. He said, “The Code of Conduct is now an interactive e-book instead of a PDF. The reasoning for that is it makes it much easier to navigate.” This adjustment intends to streamline students’ ability to access and navigate the regulations governing campus behavior.

Motivating these changes was a desire to revitalize a long-standing document that had become somewhat overlooked. Sielski articulated, “The school has had the PDF version of the handbook for so long. We felt like sometimes the handbook gets neglected, so we wanted to make something more accessible for students.” The intention was to create a more engaging and accessible resource that students would readily utilize and engage with.

The university’s approach to addressing policy violations also underwent a transformation. Sielski elaborated that the focus now involves an educational process aimed at students who break the established rules. He noted, “When there is a policy not followed, we try to make it an

educational process on enforcing the rules and help the student understand why it is an issue.” This shift towards a more educational approach seeks to promote understanding and compliance rather than solely disciplinary measures.

These updates to the Student Code of Conduct mark a significant step towards modernization and increased student engagement at Waynesburg University. By employing up-to-date formats and emphasizing education alongside enforcement, the university aims to promote a more comprehensive understanding of its policies among its student body.
