The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets women’s volleyball team finished their regular season back on Nov. 9 at St. Vincent College with a 3-0 loss.
With the loss the Yellow Jackets finish the 2024 season with a 7-16 overall record and a 3-7 record in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
Head coach Hope Johnston finished her first season as head coach for the Yellow Jackets and said that there’s a lot of growth from this season and is going to build on it over the offseason.
“This team showed that they have a lot of growth to be had before they’re able to succeed at the division three level,” Johnston said. “We did have some really great moments that showed promise for the future.”
Johnston said that she is continuing to learn everyday with the team with what works and what doesn’t work through her coaching style.
“I am learning what kind of communication tactics work with this group and which ones don’t,” Johnston said. “I’m learning what kind of drills and training that they respond to well and I’m still learning about each individual player as well as they’re learning about my coaching style and my preferred technical styles.”
Sophomore right side hitter Kristina Zadrozny said that she saw a lot of improvement from last season and she is hoping to build on it heading into her junior season.
“I think we improved a lot from last year even though as a team we pushed through a lot of obstacles this year,” Zadrozny said. “We never gave up and we kept trying to get better through the season and I think that showed at the end.”
Zadrozny said that she focuses on just her game to help manage her mentality when she is on the court.
“I kept playing for the person next to me,” Zadrozny said. “Getting my mindset away from my personal thoughts and by playing for everyone else on the court helped me focus.”
Zadrozny said that her mentality this offseason is to focus on improving her game to reach new goals for next season.
“I plan to put in extra work out during the off season to achieve this during next season,” Zadrozny said. “As a team I think we all would love to make the playoffs next year. As a team we will build on what we achieved this year and work hard to hopefully achieve this goal.”
Johnston said that her short term and long term goals still remain the same.
“I have the same goals that I had this fall and that is to have a winning season and to make the PAC tournament,” Johnston said. “My long term goals are to just keep improving and keep climbing in the pack, to hopefully win a championship.”
