The Waynesburg University women’s basketball team lost to Bethany College last night with a score of 63-50 after having struggles in the second and third quarters.
“The main problem was we couldn’t get our shots to fall,” sophomore Kara McFadden said. “Sometimes you just have those days where nothing will go in and tonight was one of those nights.”
The Jackets had the lead after the first quarter, making a couple of three pointers and would end the quarter with a score of 12-9.
However, this is where the Jackets began to struggle as they only put up six points compared to Bethany’s 20 in the second quarter. The Jackets would head into the half in a hole with a score of 29-18.
The Jackets would not be able to bounce back after the half and would be outscored again 15-9, making the score 44-27. The Jackets would end up scoring 23 points in the fourth, but it was not enough as the Bison would tally 19 of their own and take the game 63-50.
Friday would be the lead scorer for the Jackets with twelve and behind her was McFadden with nine. The Jackets as a team shot 29-percent from the field which is their worst percentage this season.
Another factor was the differential in points in the paint. The Jackets were outscored in the paint 40-18.
“I think we gave up a lot on defense and let our guard down,” sophomore Julz Mohrbacher said. “I also think we could not get our shots to fall which did not help. So, both sides of the game could have been played better.
The Jackets are now 9-8 on the season and 4-8 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. They sit eighth in the conference with a chance to sneak into the playoffs.
“We aren’t out of this run completely yet, and we can certainly learn from losses like this,” Mohrbacher said.
Waynesburg’s next matchup is at home against Geneva who the Jackets played early in the season and lost in a close matchup 86-80.
McFadden said when preparing for Geneva, anticipation is a big factor.
“We have to be ready for their press, they do a run and jump to try and get some easy steals,” McFadden said. “They like to push the pace, so we must play at our own tempo so that we are in control of their game.
The game is scheduled for this Saturday, tip-off is 1 p.m.
