The last time Waynesburg wrestlers stepped onto the mat for a competitive match was February 12, 2021.
This was nearly a year after the NCAA Division III Championship was cancelled in 2020.
The majority of this year’s Yellow Jacket roster is new faces. Head coach Ron Headlee saw a lot of positives from the young team in their recent inter-squad match.
“We know that guys are going to make mistakes,” Headlee said. “But the biggest thing I like in the room is that they’re trying things and being aggressive.”
Waynesburg finished last in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) preseason poll.
Although it seems concerning, Headlee couldn’t have been more pleased.
“I was excited we were picked last,” Headlee said. “I think that motivates our guys a little bit more and I’ve always liked to be the underdog.”
Headlee is excited to watch all his wrestlers this year, but he specifically mentioned that Junior Harley Constable, Senior Dylan Winters, Sophomore Alex Coppolo, transfer Junior Garrett Cook, and Junior Rocky McGeary will have good seasons.
McGeary is the second ranked heavyweight in the country.
He achieved individual titles from the PAC Championship and Division III Southeast Regionals from the last full season in 2019-2020.
“I talked to him about how he handled the pressure really well,” Headlee said. “But I just want him to enjoy this year and feel good that he’s back on the mat.”
McGeary has his eyes on a larger team prize this season.
“I definitely think we can win the PAC,” McGeary said. “I want to work with the team more and all improve together.”
A key point that both McGeary and Headlee touched on was how conditioned their team is this year.
“That’s always something you’re concerned about,” Headlee said.“But guys came in and worked on their own, so I think we’re ahead of schedule.”
The first action Waynesburg will see this fall is at the Ned McGinley Invitational. The tournament will be held this upcoming weekend on Nov. 6.
