The Waynesburg University Women’s basketball team defeated the Westminster College Titans on Saturday 76-61 with a dominant second half performance. The Jackets are coming off a week break and took advantage.
“It gave our bodies time to relax and rest from the previous games,” sophomore Kara McFadden said. “We worked on the little details that we needed for the Westminster game, and we executed them.”
The Lady Jackets started the game slower with only 13 points in the first quarter but played quality defense only allowing 10 points. This continued into the second quarter, the Jackets scoring 14 this time and only let up eight going into the half with a 27-18 lead.
The third quarter is when everything started clicking for Waynesburg as they put a 29-point third shooting 66-percent from the field making 12 of 18 shots.
“In the past, we were notorious for coming out flat in the third quarter, so we knew knew in order to come out on top we needed to come out with energy and take over early,” sophomore Mia Henkins said. “We came out in a full court press which I think helped speed them up and got us a few early points.”
Waynesburg kept the foot on the pedal in the fourth putting up 20 more points and the Titans just could not catch up. The game would end with a score of 76-61 keeping the Jackets playoff hopes alive.
Henkins would lead the Jackets in scoring with 15 points followed by senior Madi Dayton with 13 along with Clara-Paige Miller. Waynesburg also controlled the boards tallying 50 total rebounds compared to the Titans 41.
Waynesburg is now 11-10 overall and 6-10 in the Presidents’Athletic Conference and sit tied for seventh with Geneva College.
The Lady Jackets are in action this Wednesday against the number four seeded Saint Vincent College Bearcats.
“Saint Vincent is a very tough competitor who has beat us in the past, but I think we are in a place where we are hungry to make playoffs and know we need to win make it happened,” Henkins said. “Everyone is beatable, so our mindset going into this game is to do what we know how to do best and forget about the standings.”
The tip-off for the game on Wednesday is set for 5 p.m.
