Women’s golf team sets eyes on PAC Championships

The Waynesburg University women’s golf team is looking forward to a big match when it travels to Chestnut Ridge Golf Course for the Presidents’ Athletic Conference spring championships Saturday, April 13.

The Yellow Jackets finished the fall season at the PAC Fall Championships in fifth place out of the five competing teams. Sophomore Deanna Nagel led the Yellow Jackets, along with her teammates in freshmen Patience Yobp and Samantha Pero and senior Reagan Zeppernick.

The four competitors began the spring season at the Westminster Invitational where Waynesburg placed fourth out of the four competing teams. The Yellow Jackets were represented by Pero, Zeppernick and junior Kara Compton. The team’s top competitor in the invitational was Nagel, who posted the team’s best score of 105, which was good enough for ninth out of the 22 competitors.

With the PAC championships coming up, the Waynesburg University women’s golf team is looking forward to the challenge that stands in its path.

“We need to make every effort to take this week and our practice round serious and look at what we need to improve on,” said Nagel. “We all get a little nervous especially at bigger matches so again, just keeping our minds and nerves calm while just trying to play our best is key.”

The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets have only competed in one match this spring, with an April 9 match scheduled at Grove City. Nagel is a transfer from West Virginia Wesleyan College, and it is the first time she gets to bring her competitive nature to a PAC championship event.

“My mindset is the biggest key to playing well. No matter how many times I hit at the range or go play a few holes, nothing really prepared me for a match other than making sure my head is clear,” Nagel said.

The young talent described the difference between championship week and all of the other matches during the fiscal year.

“Many times, I’ve gone into matches where I haven’t seen the course yet and this sometimes scares other players.” Nagel said. “Luckily for PAC we will have a practice round which may give us a little help.”

From the fall season to the spring season, the Waynesburg women’s golf team has improved not only on skills, but in its competitive atmosphere and spirit on each hole. The Waynesburg women’s golf team will travel to Blairsville, Pennsylvania for the PAC Spring Championships Saturday, April 13. The first tee time is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
