The Waynesburg University women’s tennis team dropped a Presidents’ Athletic Conference match, 7-0, at Westminster on Sept. 26.
No. 2 Doubles sophomore Karly Starcher and senior Claire Lace came away with one win, dropping their set 6-1. Lace has appeared in two doubles sets this season, with two different partners.
“Playing with Karly was a challenge for the first couple of times,” Lace said. “Our height differences proved to be a challenge as I had to make sure to be out of her way when she served. We had similar strokes, however, as we both hit shallow, so that made things a lot smoother.”
Lace was also partnered previously with junior Julia Corey.
“With Julia, we balanced out better with our height, but she hits a lot deeper,” Lace said. “It was just an adjustment playing with two players with different styles.”
Lace also participated at No. 5 Singles, winning one game, falling 6-0 and 6-1. No. 3 Doubles junior Aubrey Burns and junior Alli Bailey dropped their set 6-0. Burns and Bailey are one of the pairs that often stay together.
“We actually started playing tennis the spring of our freshman year,” Burns said. “At that point neither of us have ever played tennis before so we were just destined to be partners. We are also really good friends outside of tennis, so it definitely makes us a good duo on the court.”
Waynesburg had four individual players win at least one game in their singles, with Bailey defeated 6-4 and 6-0, freshman Julia Umshares falling 6-2 and 6-1, and both Burns and sophomore Julia Luzar won two games each.
Waynesburg is now 1-6 on the season, 0-4 in PAC play, and is currently tied for sixth in the PAC standings. Westminster remains undefeated with an overall record of 6-0, going 4-0 in PAC play.
Waynesburg hosts the Thiel Tomcats Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. Since their first meeting in 2005, Waynesburg is 8-8 overall versus Thiel, winning the first eight matches and dropping the last eight.
