On Monday afternoon, the women’s tennis team was defeated by St. Vincent with a final score
of 9-0.
This puts the Yellow Jackets to a 1-6 overall record and a 0-5 conference record this season
Sophomore Aubrey Burns talked about how the team is looking for improvement in their
upcoming matches against Franciscan and Washington and Jefferson.
“I think we have a lot of room to grow,” Burns said. “However, from the start of the season we
have had much improvement. Going forward, I hope to see us compete in our matches.”
Burns talked about a few of the team’s strengths as well.
“We were very positive during the match,” Burns said. “Despite the weather and our rankings,
we all played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm which definitely helped us get through.”
When asked about the team’s game plan for the upcoming match, she says that the game plan
is always to play to the best of their abilities, focus on what they do and force the other team to
make mistakes.
“Tennis is a frustrating sport so if we can keep our composure it can get us easy points in the
long run,” adds Burns.
Head Coach Randy Pettit also commented on the team’s improvement this season.
“I’m proud of how hard the girls competed in the last two matches,” Pettit said. “We’ve
had a busy stretch the last eight days and they still came to compete.”
The team competed on the road against both Thiel and Allegheny on Sept. 22, just a few
days before their match against St. Vincent. Waynesburg also lost to Thiel and Allegheny
9-0 this season.
“There were a number of close individual games and matches and I hope that they take
that through the next two weeks,” Pettit said. “The girls have definitely shown some
overall improvement and are excited moving forward with the young roster.”
The lady yellow jackets will get back into action on the road against Fransican with the
match starting at 1pm.
