Waynesburg University’s Student Activities Board (SAB) held its homecoming kickoff on Monday, Sept. 29, in Johnson Commons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event featured a variety of events to get students excited for homecoming week.
Ashley D’Allesandro, a graduate assistant for student engagement, discussed the event as she was working.
“It’s our homecoming kickoff.” D’Allesandro said. “We’re selling our homecoming t-shirts, and we did it as kind of reveal, so nobody knew the design until now. Then, we’re also having root beer floats for anybody to stop by and get them to draw them to our table. We also have a guessing game too, for how many candies are in a jar.”
As mentioned, this was the first reveal of the homecoming t-shirts for this year. All proceeds from the shirt are going to benefit Saint Ann Church, which caught on fire one month ago. The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh in an Aug. 31 press release talked about the state of the building.
“While the main body of the church appears to be intact, adjoining spaces have suffered extensive damage,” according to the press release.
“All the money that we get from the homecoming t-shirts is going to go to Saint Ann Church to help buy Bibles for their CCD programs and their preschool, since it got destroyed in the fire,” D’Allesandro said. “All the money is going to that. We’re not getting any of it, so we’re setting the donation to $10 minimum. People can donate more if they’d like, since it is going to a good cause.”
The event also featured music put on by WCYJ-FM, 99.5 The Hive, the university’s radio station. Student Morgan Bedilion was running the booth and described her perspective of the event.
“I like that it brings the students together in a way that they might not have been otherwise,” Bedillion said. “It’s nice with SAB that they do different outdoor activities, career fairs, and stuff like that to get people back engaged in the college instead of academics all the time.”
SAB is also hosting a variety of other events leading up to the homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 4.
“Tomorrow, Tuesday, we have laser tag at 7 p.m. in the old gym. Thursday, we’re doing white out for the volleyball game, and we’re also doing a serving contest at halftime for them,” D’Allesandro said. “Students will be able to do that contest and win a prize. I think we have three different pizza coupons for students, and I think we have some other prizes as well. Friday, we have the pep rally and picnic dinner.”
More information about upcoming SAB events can be found in the bulletin board on myConnect or on posters found around campus, such as the Toilet Paper.
