Volleyball loses to Hiram in three sets

The Yellow Jackets traveled to Price Gymnasium to face Hiram on Saturday afternoon. Waynesburg was swept by Hiram, losing 25-13, 25-12, and 25-11.

The Yellow Jackets were outscored by Hiram in kills, aces, assists, and digs.

The first set showed struggles for the Yellow Jackets throughout the set until towards the end, when Waynesburg went on a four-point run to score 13 points to Hiram’s 25 points.

The second set showed more struggles at the start for Waynesburg, as the team found itself down by seven points. The Yellow Jackets fought back and forth with Hiram, even closing the lead to being down by six with a five-point run, but the team would fall short, losing by 13.

Waynesburg’s leader in kills was junior Kristina Zadrozny with seven. Zadrozny said that the connection needs to be better when transitioning on offense.

“I think we just need to keep working on our offense and our setter hitter connection,” Zadrozny said.

Zadrozny also said on what the team should look forward to as the season progresses.

“I think we just need to look forward to playing and enjoy the game. We all chose to play in college for a reason, because we find joy in the sport, and we all play the best when we’re having fun,” Zadrozny said.

Junior Ray Baniaga and senior Riley Ruffley were tied for most assists by the team with them each having five. Riley said the team improved the attack game to provide more opportunities to get kills.

“In order to improve our hitting percentage and run the offense more efficiently, I think it is key for our team to continually run our tempo and execute plays,” Ruffley said. “Going into each game, we scout and look for shots that will be open. Executing what we see in the film and what we work on before the game will help as well.”

Ruffley also said what the team can do in order to keep the sets close throughout the game.

“I think in order for us to be more competitive and keep the sets closer, our team needs to focus more on every individual point. If we put all-out effort to every play, the game will run smoother for us,” Ruffley said. “Working in games to five is also something we need to look to do more to stay focused during the rallies.”

Waynesburg’s next game will be at home against St. Vincent on Wednesday Oct. 6. The scheduled start time is at 7:00 p.m.
