Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket Yesterday, the Waynesburg University softball team wrapped up its regular season with a pair of losses on the road to Westminster College, 8-1 and 8-0.
The game one win for Westminster gave them the No. 1 seed in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament and the opportunity to serve as the host team. Waynesburg, who finishes its regular season with a 13-9 conference record, will be the No. 4 seed.
In the losses, Waynesburg was outscored 8-0 and 7-0 in innings one and two.
Freshman pitcher Morgan Walt saw her undefeated 9-0 record come to an end as she was credited with the loss in game one. Walt also returned in the second game in relief of freshman Emily Pratt, who fell to 5-4 on the season with the game two loss.
Junior shortstop Jamie Kelly gave Waynesburg its first hit of game one, and in the process, tied a program record for doubles in a single season (18).
The following inning, junior second baseman Brynn Charnesky led off with a double, advanced third on a sacrifice bunt from freshman outfielder Lorryn Sepe and then scored on a single from senior outfielder Kassidy Trimble.
“I think for me it was just trying to be patient in the box, swinging at good pitches, and also focusing on timing,” Trimble said. “She [Cheyenne Piper] is a great pitcher, her stats and success show that and that was something we all knew before going in today.”
Piper, who threw a six-inning perfect game for Westminster on Wednesday, got the win in game one to improve to 15-3.
The Trimble RBI would go down as Waynesburg’s only in the doubleheader. In game two, the Yellow Jackets recorded four hits, including two in the fifth to try and avoid the run rule, but the runners were ultimately left on base.
The next time Waynesburg takes the field will be this Thursday, traveling to Westminster again for the opening day of the PAC Tournament. Waynesburg’s opponent is Hiram College.
“I think we just need to stay present during each game and not worry about future games,” Trimble said. “Having high energy, doing our best, playing together as a team and having fun I think is so important for us, especially as the end of the season is approaching.”
Thursday’s first pitch against Hiram is scheduled for 10 a.m. If the Yellow Jackets win, they will play another game later the same day. If they lose, they return Friday, as it is a double-elimination style tournament.
