Chick-fil-A has officially moo-ved into Waynesburg. After months of being delayed, the long awaited project is finally complete.

Waynesburg University President Douglas G. Lee said the opening of the restaurant brings a positive start to the new school year.

“It feels like we’ve run a marathon through this pandemic,” President Lee said. “And it’s wonderful to have Chick-fil-A finally open and our students able to enjoy it.”

Even though the restaurant officially opened to the community in May, the university celebrated the grand opening of Chick-fil-A on Monday, Aug. 23, the first day of classes for students. The highly anticipated day was filled with utter excitement.

Shari Payne, vice president of enrollment and facilitator of the project, said she was thrilled, excited and relieved that the project had finally come to fruition.

“This was a long time in the making,” Payne said. “This was a labor of love and we’re so thrilled that the students are able to enjoy this finally.”

The project, which was announced during the Spring 2020 semester, was set to be finished by the Spring 2021 semester. COVID-19 and other circumstances, however, led to numerous setbacks. Despite the delay, the campus and surrounding community has responded positively to the new restaurant.

“The community has been wonderful. Absolutely wonderful,” Payne said. “It’s been a nice gathering place [and] we are just thrilled with the way the community has accepted the restaurant.”

Chick-fil-A will be open Monday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will accept Flex Dollars, cash and credit as forms of payment. The restaurant is open to the entire community, but will ultimately serve as another dining option for students which was the goal from the very beginning.

“We are always looking to improve the dining services and the dining facilities. Each year, we take something and improve it,” Payne said. “There should be something for everyone. And that’s our goal.”

The completion of this project and new school year brings a fresh start to Waynesburg University’s campus.

“I’ve really noticed how happy everyone is to be back, how nearly normal we are and how that has really affected the morale,” President Lee said. “Everyone’s excited … It’s going to be a great year!”
