Head coach Hayley Kirby couldn’t find many positive things out of her teams straight set sweep, at the hands of the Washington & Jefferson Presidents Thursday evening. The set scores were 25-18, 25-8 and 25-11. This is Waynesburg’s ninth consecutive loss to the Presidents.
“In all three sets we started horribly,” Kirby said. “No effort, no drive, no nothing.”
Hannah Colvin and Hannah Buhr lead the Jackets in kills with five a piece.
Senior Alyssa Proper, Colvin, and Alyson Johnson each had one ace, while Mya Brooks and Kayla Stohon each had two blocks. Alexis Phillips led Waynesburg with 10 assists, andJohnson added nine digs.
Kirby mentioned that the Jackets weren’t consistent in attack executions throughout the evening. The Jackets had 100 attacks, 29 were errors and 17 were kills.
“We just have to eliminate our errors,” Kirby said. “It’s what kills us is errors.”
For the Presidents, Morgan Jacques led two statistical categories on the evening with seven kills and eight blocks. Mallory O’Brien led the team with 15 kills. W&J’s defense was solid as Makenzie Coughlin had 25 digs. From a team standpoint, W&J had 49 digs compared to Waynesburg’s 39.
The Presidents’ defense also blocked well as they beat Waynesburg 12-3 in that department.
Waynesburg is now 2-9 overall and 0-3 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play. W&J improved to 3-11 overall and 2-1 in PAC play.
Waynesburg will look to end it’s nine match losing streak with the Presidents in the team’s second meeting, set for Nov. 2, a senior day battle for the Jackets.
Waynesburg’s next challenge is Saturday, Sept. 28 when it plays two of three matches a part of a tri-match Saturday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Waynesburg will start the day with a PAC battle against Thiel at 11 a.m., before taking on Earlham, which is where Kirby coached before Waynesburg, in a non-conference tilt beginning around 3 p.m.
Overall, Kirby was disappointed in the style in which her team played and said if they would’ve stuck to their gameplan, things would’ve been different.
“If we played our game, we would have beat them,” Kirby said.
