The rise of the Savannah Bananas

Baseball is a constantly changing and adapting sport. Many changes have occurred over the years including the introduction of larger bases, the implementation of the pitch clock and the addition of the runner rule in extra innings. 

Some viewers love these changes, while others dislike them. While Major League Baseball continues to update and renew the game, another organization is making a huge change to baseball as we know it. 

This organization is known as the Savannah Bananas. The Bananas are playing a different kind of baseball including a faster-paced game, fan interactions and the wild dances that are seen all over social media. The team tours all over the world, recently coming to PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. 

The presence of fans at the games is immense, to put it mildly. According to an article from Baseball Digest, in the year 2016, the Bananas averaged 3,659 fans per game across 22 home games in their season. The team also had 17 sellout games, bringing the total to 80,504 fans in one season. 

Something magical happened within the organization; they gained significant traction on social media. Banana Ball took a huge leap in fan popularity in 2023. In just under a decade, the number 80,000 jumped to a staggering 500,000 fans in total for the season. 

The Bananas were able to add 3 other teams within the organization. These teams are the Party Animals, the Firefighters and the Texas Tailgaters. Their 2025 world tour features games in 40 cities including three NFL stadiums and 17 MLB ballparks. Earlier in the 2025 season, the Bananas played the Party Animals in Clemson University’s Memorial Stadium. They sold out the venue, and an astonishing 81,000 fans were in attendance. 

People are so interested in coming to these games that there is a massive backorder on tickets. Fans and spectators currently have to wait for a lottery system to even get a chance at purchasing tickets. 

With all this information being said, the Savannah Bananas have a bright future ahead of them. The current path that they are heading down is very positive. The Bananas found a way to make an amazing sport even better for viewers of all ages. The Bananas have found a way to appeal to the casual fan that baseball can grow into the modern era.
