The Waynesburg University volleyball team lost 3-0 on Saturday, Nov. 9, to Saint Vincent College to end the 2024 season.
Waynesburg scored fifty-six total points in all three sets, losing 25-18 in set one, 25-18 in set two and 25-16 in set three.
Sophomore Krista Wilson led Waynesburg with eight kills in all three matches.
Wilson said the team was inconsistent all throughout the match which was hard for the team.
“We had some really good moments during the match and some really bad moments,” Wilson said. “In those bad moments, Saint Vincent had long runs of points where we fell behind and couldn’t catch up.”
Junior Riley Ruffley said the inconsistency throughout the game was a huge factor in the loss.
“Although there was a glimpse of us playing together and as a unit, integrating things we have used all season it was not consistent enough,” Ruffley said. “Saint Vincent is a very scrapy team who does not let the ball die very often, so ending the long rallies was key and we did not always execute that.”
Even with the loss, Wilson said that there still are positives to take away from this match that the team can use next season.
“Even when we were down, staying positive and keeping energy made it easier to score,” Wilson said. “I am going to take that idea of staying positive and apply it in the offseason and next season.”
Ruffley said she thinks that there has been improvement each game throughout the season that can be applied for even more improvement in the offseason.
“Going into the spring and next season, we will continue to improve our game and work better as an overall unit,” Wilson said. “We hope to build on the culture they built throughout it all.”
Head coach Hope Johnston said that there is a mentality set all season and will stay the same throughout the offseason.
“It has taken me all season to convince these girls that they are a very good volleyball team and that they can do anything that they set their minds to,” Johnston said. “I think that the team has had a lot of ups and downs but they finally had that mentality to where they know what it takes to win now.”
Waynesburg finished the 2024 season with a 7-16 overall record and a 3-7 conference record, finishing in ninth place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference standings.
