The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets slow start leads to a 13-point loss to out-of-conference opponent The College of Wooster 68-55.
After being outscored in the first quarter 22-7 the Lady J’s replied with a 21-10 second quarter to make it 32-28 at the half.
“It was just a lack of execution,” head coach Sam Jones said. “Lack of attention to detail.”
Waynesburg made it close into the final quarter of action with a Wooster lead of 43-40. But the Yellow Jackets ended the game the same way they started with a rough quarter getting outscored 25-15.
“It feels good to end with a double-double,” sophomore Kalista Friday said. “I would rather come out with a win and see our team succeed.”
The Yellow Jackets finished with three double-digit scorers (Friday, Julz Mohrbacher, and Madisen Dayton). Friday and Mohrbacher both finished with double-doubles, Friday with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Mohrbacher with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
“She’s just a quick guard,” Jones said when talking about Friday. “She’s been a great addition for sure.”
The Lady Yellow Jackets will face the onslaught of their schedule for the second time this year; Washington & Jefferson College, Saint Vincent College, and Geneva College. The three teams won by 17, nine, and four.
“I’m hoping we can end the season with a few more PAC wins,” Friday said. “I feel our confidence improved with the win against Bethany so I’m hoping we can build on that.”
Last time Waynesburg University’s women’s basketball game beat Washington & Jefferson during their 2016-2017 season. The Yellow Jackets won both games against the Presidents that season too.
“W&J is a very good basketball team,” Jones said. “They are a tough team, a really tough team at home.”
The Lady J’s will head up I-79 to play the Presidents tomorrow night, tipoff is set for 6 p.m. You can catch all the action on Waynesburg University’s radio station, WCYJ-FM. Spencer Frattare and Scott Donnelly will announce the doubleheader.
