The Waynesburg University softball team returned home after competing in the Spring Games tournament in Florida and returned with a 2-3 record.
The Yellow Jackets went 1-1 in their first four games and 1-2 in their last three.
Junior Grace Higgins finished with a .333, which was the best batting average of all who appeared in all five games. Higgins in 18 at bats had two runs, six hits, and an RBI.
“I think we could have done a lot better, but I’m proud of everyone,” Higgins said. “We worked hard…Florida had a lot of competition and we played tough teams and are better for it.”
Waynesburg has brought in some new faces, including freshmen Trinity Edge and Brynn Charmesky.
In Charmesky’s first-ever collegiate start, she went 6.2 innings pitched, allowed two runs, and struck out three batters.
“We have a lot of talent on this team and the freshmen are talented and play a huge role on this team.”
Edge was one of four players who played and started in all five games throughout the week. She finished with a .286 batting average, four hits, and an RBI. Edge also pitched in four games (20.1 innings pitched), and had a 1-2 record, with a .069 ERA. Edge during that span only allowed two earned runs and 11 strikeouts.
“It honestly feels amazing to get early experience at the college level,” she said. “I’m excited to get feedback from my coaches and have fun with my team,” Edge said when asked how she feels about starting off the season on the right foot as she continues to look to grow throughout the season.
The softball team will head back out onto the field when they play host in a double-header to non-conference opponent Carlow on Thursday, March 14, with the first game starting at 3:30 p.m..
