With the end of the year rapidly approaching, students involved in the performing arts have been jamming their last minute rehearsals for their final performances of the semester. Performances for the Barber Shop and Beauty Shop choirs, the concert choir, symphonic band, brass band and woodwind ensemble are fast approaching.
The first of the performances will take place this Saturday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Roberts Chapel. At this concert, both the concert choir and symphonic band will be sharing what they have practiced. The concert choir will perform first, with a worship-themed repertoire—consisting of songs with varying messages and speeds. Among their list of songs is “Psalm 23,” a piece in which only the female voices will be featured. The choir portion of the concert will also feature several soloists and approximately 11 songs.
One of the songs being featured in the performance, called “He is Watching Over Israel,” was also performed on Charter Day.
“I’m really excited to be performing all of these songs,” said freshman Heidi Dziak, a member of the concert choir. “Even though we have a large repertoire. We’ve all put so much work into perfecting it. We can’t wait to share with everyone the music that means so much to us.”
After the concert choir portion of the concert concludes, the symphonic band will take the stage, continuing with their year-long pattern of movie themed concerts. During this concert, students will be performing music by John Williams—who is most notable for his film scores of Star Wars, Home Alone, Jaws and E.T.
Another set of performances is the final Chamber Works concert April 13 at noon in the Marsh Center. At this concert, there will be a number of ensembles performing, including the Beauty Shop Choir, Barbershop Quartet, Wind Ensemble and Brass Ensemble.
The performances are less than a week away, but the songs to be performed are not all set in stone. The Beauty Shop is surely set to perform “For the Longest Time” by Billy Joel, though, which is especially intriguing to Dziak, who is also a member of the Beauty Shop Chior.
“I’m really excited to perform this particular piece because, for one it’s Billy Joel, and secondly it has some really beautiful harmonies,” said Dziak.
Additionally, the brass ensemble has been practicing a number of different pieces but have not yet decided exactly what they are going to play.
