
The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets defeated the top of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Saint Vincent College Bearcats on Saturday 63-57.
Jansen Knotts led the Jackets in points with 19 and had five rebounds, Antone Baker also had 12 points with five rebounds.
The first five minutes of action there was not too much scoring as the score was only 6-2 with the Bearcats leading. As the game progressed however, the Jackets and Bearcats were neck and neck most of the whole first half and went into halftime with the Jackets leading by one with a score of 29-28 ending the half with three successful free throws by Korey Mitchum.
The second half began with a burst of energy from Waynesburg as they gained an 11-point lead with about 12 minutes left in the half with a 45-34 score. Saint Vincent was not going to give up that easily and rallied back to cut the lead to one point with 3:15 remaining and a score of 51-50.
The Jackets kept their composure and were able to maintain the lead by making 8-10 free throws in the last three minutes of the game, and the Bearcats could not catch up. Waynesburg went 20-25 from the free throw line during the game with Knotts going 7-8 and Mitchum going 6-7.
“Great win, but we have a couple more to get where we want to be,” junior Korey Mitchum said. “We will enjoy it tonight but come Monday it’s onto the next,” said Mitchum.
When asked about his thoughts about knocking down the 1st place team. “…A couple of us had a chip after the loss the other night so we laid all the cards on the table.”
The Bearcats drop to 17-2 overall and second in the PAC at 12-2 behind Geneva while the Jackets jump to a 10-9 overall and fourth in the conference at 7-7.
The Yellow Jackets will play their next game on Wednesday at the first place Geneva at 7:30pm.
